The Problem
In our research, we have found a disturbing fact about Senior care. Whether it be short or long term, it is in a crisis. According to statistics, there are over a million people over the age of 60 that are on a fixed income and there are few affordable or scalable insurance options to meet the needs of this aging population—in everything from housing to services and care. In fact, once a person becomes 66 years old in the United States, their insurance share-or-cost increases substantially. Medicare plans shift to less covered care and medication coverage and Medicaid enforces an increase of $1400 or more in a senior's share-of-cost (depending on how much social security a person receives) while able-bodied individuals who are able to work, continue to receive a $0 share of cost. How on earth does our nation reason that our senior citizens can afford a $1400 share of cost on a fixed income?
How we care for senior citizens should not be considered a community issue because it's a nation-wide issue. The way this nation casts aside our seniors is not healthy or sustainable for them. It’s time we shift our view of aging to ensure that our senior citizens are taken care of because these are our very own loved ones we are talking about. It's a fact, everyone is eventually going to be a senior. When you become a senior, if you are not already, what help, resources, or options are going to be available for you?
