Originally sought out to aid the tens of thousands of people who survived the Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, in August of 2005. Kari Taylor founded the Supporting Gulf Efforts Foundation (SGE). After receiving her 501c3 determination, she connected with health center staff in Louisiana and supported the Katrina Relief Efforts throughout the region until FEMA blocked support efforts. Not wanting to dissolve the organization, Kari reorganized and repurposed SGE to help children with Aids and support pediatric aids research. The SGE Foundation’s name was changed to The Hope for Severe Hardship Foundation (HUSH) and later changed to The HUSH Foundation.
At that time, The HUSH Foundation’s mission was changed to support Children with AIDS, Pediatric AIDS Research, Childhood Obesity, and the Elderly, To support the new mission, new programs were developed: Creative Arts Program, KT’s Sports Camp, Division of Sports and Recreation, and a special program dedicated to serving the elderly.
Under the Creative Arts Program, entertainment events were hosted to provide Grants to Aids Organizations and Pediatric Research. The HUSH Foundation enlisted Brandi Taylor, an astute, trained dancer and instructor to head the foundation’s Creative Arts Program, her leadership was a catalyst for a successful dance platform for dance classes, dance ensembles, and partnerships with KPA and 2wisted Elegance, and the Jan Fam Project, which provided students to performed throughout the Torrance, Los Angeles Metropolitan, and Los Angeles County areas. KT’s Sports Camps were headed by former Football Player, Coach, and Defensive Coordinator, and Referee, Kim Taylor, II. The Sports Program ultimately expanded to Aurora, Colorado where the Regional Division of Sports and Recreation was Headquartered and headed by Kerry Lovett. Under Kerry’s leadership, a Pop Warner Football Team was developed which afforded the Aurora community an opportunity to provide and outlet for at risk children and teens.
In 2017, Kari’s Mother suffered a stroke, and she began aiding her mom on a part-time basis. One day, her mother asked her about her non-profit organization. She wanted to know more about what the foundation did. Kari informed her of the wonderful work the foundation was doing to help Children and that she had a program that provided resources for the Elderly. Upon hearing that, her mother suggested that because there were not a lot of programs for aged adults and that perhaps focusing on assisting the elderly would help bring awareness to the deficit in programs for the elderly. Kari did not understand the magnitudrthat conversation she had with her mother would have on her foundation until 2019. By then, her mother had suffered a Heart Attack and 5 strokes in total and left bedridden with no ability to move or speak: only able to communicate with her eyes and face. After a bad experience with a SNF where her Mother was receiving therapy after her last stroke, Kari and her siblings made the decision for her Mother to homebound and receive care in her own home and Kari making the biggest decision of her life - to be the primary caregiver for her Mother. That courageous decision would not only allow her to use her Nursing skills, but also gain valuable knowledge about the depth of the Home Health Care industry. She also established relationships with Physicians, NPs, RNs, LVNs, Therapists (Physical, Occupational, and Speech), Wound Specialists, Labs, Home Health Agencies, Equipment and Supply Companies, and more. This experience also allowed her to be exposed to the non-inclusion, lack of support and programs available for the elderly, which led her to become determined to ensure her mother received the best quality of care possible.
In 2022, Kari’s Mother passed away unexpectantly in the Hospital, and it was that day that Kari realized the impact the conversation she had previously with her mother regarding the mission of her nonprofit organization. It became clear that The HUSH Foundation needed to be reorganized again, and the mission changed to the rewarding purpose of servicing and advocating for seniors.
